MINOR EMERGENCIES YOU CAN DEAL WITH YOURSELF

PAIN
Mild toothache or a feeling of pressure may occur after an orthodontic check-up, but it will usually subside quickly. If necessary, the discomfort can be relieved with a mild painkiller. Soft food can also help.
IF THE END OF THE BRACE WIRE IS POKING OR HAS SLIPPED OUT, OR A BRACKET IS CAUSING DISCOMFORT
This can cause an uncomfortable pressure point. If the wire has slipped out, you can try to thread it back in yourself. If this is not possible, cover the protruding wire or troublesome bracket with wax or chewing gum, or carefully shorten the protruding end with nail clippers.
IF A CLASP ON A REMOVABLE BRACE HAS BROKEN
If the appliance still fits well and does not cause discomfort, you can continue wearing it. You do not need to visit the practice immediately; simply let us know at your next regular appointment.

EMERGENCIES THAT REQUIRE AN APPOINTMENT

If your brace has one of the defects listed below or you are unable to resolve a minor emergency yourself, call our practice on 062 212 63 20 to arrange an appointment.
Outside working hours, at weekends, on public holidays and during our holidays, our answering machine provides details of the covering dentist or emergency dental service.
IF A BRACKET, BAND, ELASTIC RING OR WIRE HAS COME LOOSE
Damaged orthodontic appliances can delay treatment. If there is no discomfort, the appliance may be left as it is for a short time, but it should be repaired at our practice as soon as possible at a pre-arranged appointment. If you already have an appointment within the next few days, you may wait until then.
IF A REMOVABLE APPLIANCE IS DAMAGED AND NO LONGER FITS PROPERLY
If the appliance no longer fits, it cannot be worn properly. Please arrange an appointment with us as soon as possible so that we can readjust it.
